The challenge

Field researchers lose most of what they hear. Notebooks stay in bags during interviews, and cloud transcription is not an option when the people being interviewed have been promised privacy.

The approach

Everything happens on the phone. I designed the recording screen to be usable without looking, then built the prototype in SwiftUI with on-device transcription so we could test it in a real market, in the rain.

The outcome

The team now captures every interview in full. Tagging by voice, an idea that came from watching researchers with their hands full, turned out to be the feature they mention first.
